Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It's sometimes referred to as "sleep dentistry," although that's not entirely accurate. Patients are usually awake – with the exception of those who are under general anesthesia.
For patients who are anxious about a dental appointment or for patients who need help relaxing during a procedure, sedation can help.

Normally, no. Don't expect sedation dentistry to be covered by your dental insurance. If you need general anesthesia though (which is not technically considered to be sedation), your insurance may cover the cost as it is more likely to be a medically necessary part of the procedure.
